PSL: Gameweek 1

There might be no fans sitting in the extra-strong seats but this PSL season is certainly going to be an extraordinary one and the Left Winger is here with his week 1 calls…

Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns

Last season’s top two kick off the campaign! Chiefs beat Maritzburg 2 – 1 in the MTN 8 last week and defending champs Sundowns suffered a shock 1 – 0 defeat to Celtic. With little else to go on, this is tougher to call than normal and I don’t think there will be more goals in it than Gavin Hunt will say “you know” in the post-match interview.

Prediction: 1 – 1

Baroka v Maritzburg United

Baroka have been rather quiet in the off-season… well, other than suspending their head coach Dylan Kerr, so the assistant is in charge for the time being. Maritzburg have lost goalkeeper Richard Ofori recently to Pirates, so that will be a question for their coach Eric Tinkler to ponder over.

Prediction: 1 – 2

Bloemfontein Celtic v Golden Arrows

The Bloem boys will be bursting after that win against Sundowns and Arrows will need time to sharpen after losing coach Steve Khompela, who has joined Sundowns.

Prediction: 2 – 0

Cape Town City v Chippa Utd

Going by last season’s performances: City finished 6th and Chippa 11th. City have lost star striker Kermit Erasmus to Pirates but coach Jan van Riebeeck (Riekerink) is more progressive than that bunch were in 1652 and he’ll continue to play attractive, attacking football. Chippa were the lowest scorers last season, scoring just 18 goals in 30 games.

Prediction: 2 – 1

SuperSport Utd v Black Leopards

With DSTV coming in as league sponsors, there will be added pressure on SSU to be at least challenging for honours. They finished 5th last season and with the acquisition of a player like Iqraam Rayners to add to the striking of Bradley Grobler, they should be top 4 at least. Leopards have a new sponsor and a new Belgian coach and he will have his work cut out to get them to change their spots; they avoided relegation via the play-offs last season.

Prediction: 2 – 0

AmaZulu v Orlando Pirates

The “new owner” signs are up at AmaZulu (bit worn out) and they’ve brought in some new old legs in Siphiwe Tshabalala. I’d go over/under on the commentator mentioning Shabba’s World Cup 2010 goal in the first ten minutes of this game, to be played at Kings Park on Saturday evening. German General Josef Zinnbauer of the skull and bones clan will accept no prisoners after this one.

Prediction: 1 – 2

Stellenbosch v Moroka Swallows

Newly promoted Swallows have just worn off their champagne for their trip to Winelands for their first game back in the big time. Look out this season for a Stellies side that are getting better with time, like a good wine!

Prediction: 2 – 0

TTM v TS Galaxy

These guys are threatening to turn the PSL into the Premier Stunt League with their antics already and the season is only beginning. They are both new franchises to the league and their registration of players, pre-season training and hiring of coaches has been like a Showmax series that just keeps glitching.

Prediction: 3 – 1

The quad @ 16/1:

CT City, SuperSport Utd, Pirates and Stellenbosch all to win.
