La Liga: Matchweek 28

Sevilla vs Real Betis

Hope you’ve got a spicy paella ready for this feisty derby as La Liga resumes tonight! Expect the referee to go to his pocket a couple times (maybe even have a dabble on it)- 9 of the last 10 games between these two have seen four or more cards handed out.

Prediction: 3 – 1

Granada vs Getafe

No form to go on, no fans in the stadium makes all the games very tricky to call especially in the first week back. These two teams do pick up cards so I’d be looking at an over here but would steer away from a result bet.

Prediction: 1 – 1

Valencia vs Levante

I loved the Valencia teams of the early 2000s: Gaizka Mendieta, Claudio Lopez, Kily Gonzalez and co. I digress though, for they have slipped a long way back since then. They have won their last 5 home games against Levante though and will do so again.

Prediction: 2 – 1

Espanyol vs Alaves

High number of cards here nut not much goal action. Take your siesta during this game and keep your energy for the games later on.

Prediction: 0 – 1

Celta Vigo vs Villarreal

Celta Vigo have only won one of their last 5 home games against Villarreal. That was with their fans packed into their small but pretty Estadio Balaidos. They won’t even have that advantage this time.

Prediction: 0 – 2

Leganes vs Real Valladolid

These teams have names that are pronounced differently all over the country, depending on where you are. That’s about the only thing interesting about them as far as their football is concerned this season!

Prediction: 1 – 0

Mallorca vs Barcelona

Ooh, Mallorca. Beautiful beaches, wine, women and song but I digress again. They do a special type of paella here! With or without Messi (possibly injured), the Catalans will enjoy their visit to the island.

Prediction: 0 – 4

Athletic Club vs Atletico Madrid

Do not confuse these two teams: Athletic Club (Bilbao) was formed by British workers in the late 19th century and that’s why they have an English name. For a long time, they even had a traditional British, direct 4-4-2 style of play.  Later on, some students from Bilbao but studying in Madrid, formed Athletic Club Madrid, which became Atletico de Madrid. So whatever you do, don’t say “Athletico” because that’s neither English, nor Spanish, por favor!

Prediction: 2 – 1

Real Madrid vs Eibar

Walk in the park for Madrid. They could even play Eibar in the park for that matter,

Prediction: 3 – 0

Real Sociedad vs Osasuna

Sociedad are having one of the best seasons in recent memory and are in reach of a lucrative Champions League spot. Have heard worrying things about the state of the camp at Osasuna.

Prediction: 2 – 0
